How old do I have to be to take a Driver’s Education course?

The student can be 14 years old to take the class portion but cannot get their permit until they are 15.

 

What is the state requirement for a Driver’s Education course?

The state requires that any person under the age of 18 must take a Driver’s Education course that consists of 30 hours of classroom, 6 hours of behind the wheel driving and 6 hours of observation.  A student may substitute the 6 hours of observations with 2 addition behind the wheel driving hours.

 

When do I obtain my permit?

A student must be 15 years old to obtain their permit and be enrolled in a driver’s education course.  Upon completing 4 hours of classroom instruction students will need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to take their permit test.  Students will receive all of the necessary paperwork on the first day of class to obtain their permit.  Students will receive a copy of the Illinois Rules of the Road.  An online version is also available at: The Illinois Secretary of State Website.  Students will learn the Rules of the Road book and take a practice test in preparation for their permit test.

 

What do I need to bring to the DMV to get my permit?

Students need to bring their permit application,  their original birth certificate issued by the county where the student was born, and proof of residency.   ex-  parent’s driver license, school ID, pay stub.

 

When can I begin driving with Palos Driving School?

Students may begin driving with an instructor upon obtaining their permit and completing 4 hours of classroom work.

 

When do I receive my Certificate of Completion?

The certificate of completion will be mailed to the student’s home from the Secretary of State’s office.  The Secretary of State will be notified by Palos Driving School that the student has completed every phase of the driver’s education program (classroom, behind the wheel driving and observation hours).

 

What do I need to bring to the DMV to get my license?

Instruction permit, 50 hour log sheet with parent/guardian signature, certificate of completion, signed social security card, original birth certificate, and insurance card for vehicle being used for the examination.  Parent or guardian must accompany student.
